Escape Rooms in Chelmsford

You can’t play just one Chelmsford escape room! There are just too many to choose from. Play them all and it’ll be weeks before you escape Chelmsford! There are so many escape games here. Our VR Escape Rooms are just 20 minutes away too so if you knowescape rooms (see what I did there?) then you are spoilt for choice.

Below you’ll find a list of the escape rooms in Chelmsford - accurate as of May 2024. (Scroll down if you want to get straight to the point, but you’d miss out on my ramblings which would be very sad!) I’ll try to keep it up to date, but if you know of any escape rooms I’ve missed, any new ones, or any that are no more, please ping a quick note to me on the chat button below so I can keep the list useful.

Please Note: This is not an escape room review page. I’ll share my thoughts on the rooms I’ve enjoyed, but I won’t be sharing any negative thoughts on rooms I wasn’t so keen on. I don’t like scary escape rooms or low light but others love them - personal taste plays such an important part.) There are so many great escape rooms near me and the search engines tend to favour just a few which means some of the Chelmsford escape rooms don’t get the exposure they deserve. Hopefully this list will make finding your next escape a little easier.

Chelmsford city is ancient - 2500BC apparently! Escape room enthusiasts of a certain age might remember the sitcom Chelmsford 123 - set during Roman times. Not a great source of historical knowledge I admit. Shopping is great, with many top brand name outlets, and there are numerous great cafes, pubs and restaurants. It’s well worth making an escape room in Chelmsford the focal point of a longer day out.

Which is my favourite escape room Chelmsford? Hard to say, but lets have a look at what there is.

Starting with the previously punned KnowEscape because these guys need special mention. Yes they have branches all over the place and yes the escape games are repeated BUT they manage to make the rooms feel as if they’re homemade (in a really good way!) They’re also themed around a fictional place and a lot of the same characters crop up in their narratives. It’s a great concept. I’ve been fortunate enough to play at their Chelmsford escape room, their escape room in Maldon, and their fantastic overnight escape room in Bishop’s Stortford (which gets a very special mention elsewhere here.)

At their Chelmsford escape room KnowEscape have The Governor, The Last Testament, and Crazy Cat Lady. The Governor is next on my list to play. Apparently it’s one of the largest escape rooms in essex. I played Crazy Cat Lady in 2023 and, being honest, wasn’t expecting much as it seemed aimed at the younger player. What a surprise though - it was a lot of fun with so much packed into quite a small space. If you are looking for a recommendation for escape rooms that accept children, Crazy Cat Lady is for 6+, and it’ll make you smile.

Escape Live Chelmsford is another of the second franchised escape room in Chelmsford. The other local one is Escape Live Southend which is mentioned on the Escape Rooms in Southend page. The good news is that the Southend Escape Live and the Chelmsford Escape Live have completely different games. I’m sorry to say that while I’ve played all of the escape games in Southend, I haven’t yet played the Chelmsford escape games. They’ve got a nice selection too. There’s a fantasy escape room, Sword in the Throne; a jungle escape room called, very precisely, Escape the Jungle; and a space themed escape room whose artwork couldn’t get much closer to a certain Mr Lucas’ films complete with a hooded character and star destroyer (I’m a big fan so can’t wait to play it!)

Next on the long list of Chelmsford escape rooms to choose from is Professor Delgado’s Escape Rooms. If you’ve read through the pages here you’ll know I’m a big fan of owner operated rooms and Professor Delgado’s games are designed in house by people who love escape rooms. You’ll find the scary escape room Escape the Asylum; the fantasy escape room, Escape the Labyrinth; and the carnival themed Escape the Circus.

The final Chelmsford escape room to mention is Escape Chelmsford. (Part of the same group as Escape Basildon.) In Chelmsford they have Taken and Prohibition. Sensibly the venues have completely different escape games (although if you head north Taken is available in Ipswich too.) . I’ve not played either yet but judging by their low success rates they look quite tricky, which means I definitely want to play them!

Chelmsford you have so much choice… how do you get anything done!

A while ago there was a virtual reality experience in Chelmsford… It was us!

Chelmsford for You and Anglia Ruskin asked us to provide a VR experience as part of Chelmsford Science Week. We took over the ground floor of the lovely Shire Hall and two hundred people had chance to play a section of Space Station Tiberia over the course of two days. BBC Look East were kind enough to include us in their coverage of the event. Here we are with our portable kit as seen on the BBC

Hopefully it is obvious that I opened my Virtual Reality Escape Rooms near Chelmsford not just because I’m a VR fan, but also because I’m a big escape room fan. How lucky to have so many of the best escape rooms near me. If you fancy something different or are tired of padlocks and codes, come and give one of our Virtual Reality escape rooms a go. We’ve got several now and we’re adding at least one new one a year. If you ever get though all of the escape games in Chelmsford we’ll keep you busy!
